You go to school, you get to know people, you get to know awesome people. In that group of awesome people, you’ll meet future doctors, lawyers, managers, television personalities, and bankers. You’ll meet them all.
You’ll also get to, if you’re lucky, to meet someone who is going to change the game. I went to a pretty happenin’ school, North Carolina A&T State University, home of Ronald McNair, Jesse Jackson, Terrance J, and Taraji P. Henson. My freshman year, we were all gathered in Moore Gym where there were frequent cpyhers and freestyle battles. These were always highlights of after-cafe entertainment–eat a good meal, socialize in front of the cafe, head off back to your dorms, or to the other side of the campus for an event.
There, in the white washed limelight on a black stage surrounded by a blue tarmac and rhyme hungry Aggies is where a legend was made. His name? Joshua Gunn.
Going by the moniker J-Gunn, Josh became something that we hadn’t seen in most of the battles and cyphers around campus–a standout favorite. Whenever he hit the stage, people applauded, whenever he dropped a dope verse, people screamed, whenever he won, people understood, this kid is going somewhere.
And he did. He’s been all over the world, doing concerts, radio interviews with MC Lyte, representing BET and further showing the world what we knew all along. This guy has it.
Here is one of my favorite tracks of J. Gunn–Pinot Noir. If you’ve ever been to one of his live shows, its amazing to see the people in the audience call back his lyrics and sing along with the chorus.
